All about The Market Inn

The Market Inn Story
Historical Roots
The Market Inn has a rich history dating back to 1860, originally known as the Cattle Market Inn. Built by the Bedford Estate shortly after the local cattle market relocated, the pub has been a cornerstone of Tavistock's community for over 150 years.
Located at the junction of Whitchurch Road and Pixon Lane, the three-storey building has undergone several transformations. It was briefly known as the Mariner Inn before becoming the Market Inn we know today. A date stone with a ducal crown still adorns the building, a testament to its historic origins.

Early Tenants
The inn's first tenant was Caroline Luke, a widow who took over in the 1860s after previously running the Plymouth Inn. Over the decades, the pub was managed by notable local families, including the Brook family, who ran the hostelry for forty years. Each tenant brought their own character to the establishment, from Hannah Brook managing the inn with her children to Alice Gidley navigating challenging times in the early 1900s.
